What keeps Null Island Afloat?
For many years, Null Islanders were content to fish and farm. It was a hard life, but we knew no other. Although death came early, sometimes unexpectedly, our unusual marriage customs assured that the population remained robust.
With exposure to the outside world and its technological wonders, Null Islanders began to want more. Today, you would be hard-pressed to find an Islander without an iPad. We also have the highest per-capita Segway ownership in the world! In fact, the new off-road model of the Segway was developed especially for the Null Island market.
How can a small Island nation pay for these expensive luxuries? We have NIBEC to thank for our prosperity! Thanks to President Smythe, who first saw the commercial potential of Null Island's extensive Bauxite deposits, we are able to send almost every young Null Islander overseas for a comprehensive education.
And the vast majority of Null Islanders choose to return home after graduation! As President Smythe says, "The whole family is much happier when the young people return."
You might think that Null Island would not offer exciting opportunities to a group of young PhDs. But nothing could be further from the truth. Thanks to a state-of-the-art satellite data service, most of the working age population of Null Island is engaged in software development for an industry-leading American company. This mutually beneficial relationship is expected to keep the Null Island economy healthy for many years to come.
